THE VOORHEES BURYING GROUND

Copied May 21, 1916, by Marian E. Beats and Charles T. Beats.

This yard is in Readington Township about four miles north of Flemington on the road from Packer's Island to the Woods M. E. Church. This lot was conveyed May 12th, 1854, by deed recorded in Volume 110, page 118, by Ralph V. Smith and Sarah M., his wife, to "John B. Sharp and Joseph Carkhuff, together with the descendants of the following named persons whose bodies have been buried in the lot of ground herein conveyed, viz., Joseph Hankinson (the elder), Benjamin Allegar, Sr., John Huffman, Folkard Voorhees, Cornelius Bowman, Adrian Kinney and Jacob Smith." It contains about a quarter of an acre. It has also been known at various times as the Hankinson, Kinney and Smith Burying Ground from the name of former owners of the farm and of the families represented there, according to the temporary prominence of the name.
